As many Muslims discussed the unmosqued phenomenon found in virtually every city in the United States, I decided to study the positive stories and practices of masjids—not only nationwide, but here in Atlanta. At least three of our masjids are truly beacons of hope. Here are the three you need to visit in 2015, and why you should visit them.

1. Roswell Community Masjid

Location
345 Market Place, Roswell, GA 30075

Strengths
Civic Engagement, Education, Interfaith and Community Service, Youth

Why You Should Visit

The Roswell Community Masjid (known as RCM) is probably one of the best masjids in Atlanta. I personally know, and have worked with RCM’s leadership. I have the utmost confidence in their vision. They have done a great job of promoting transparency and sustainability in their masjid. While their facility may not boast fancy architecture or marble or a minaret or a dome, their facility allows a multipurpose space for lectures, classes, and workshops. RCM’s long term vision and leadership make it a great place for you to attend workshops, lectures, and khutbahs.

2. Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam

Location
560 Fayetteville Road Southeast, Atlanta, GA 30316
Website

Strengths
Interfaith, Education, Civic Engagement, Youth and Community Service

Why You Should Visit

I had the pleasure of getting to know the Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam leadership and I was extremely impressed by the feeling of community I found.

The amazing thing about the masjid is that the prayer area is designed in the same fashion as the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)’s masjid. There is no divider between the men and women, there is one entrance for men and women to enter into the masjid, and there is a genuine feeling of community, peace, mercy and warmth when you enter the masjid.

Another great quality I learned about when I spoke to the masjid leadership was that they had a financial sustainability plan in the form of renting commercial and residential properties to help support masjid operations and programs. I was extremely impressed by the long-term vision of the masjid leadership to do this and not overburden the community with constant fundraisers and financial appeals. Also, the khutbahs are always amazing and relevant!

3. Madina Institute, USA

Location
3580 Sweetwater Road, Lawrenceville, GA 30044
Website
http://www.madinainstituteusa.org/
Strengths
Two Resident Scholars (Sh. Mohammed Ninowy and Sh. Mohammed Mendes), Islamic Education, Community Service, Women-friendly, Youth-friendly, and Young Professionals-friendly

Why You Should Visit

I can honestly say that the only place in which I’ve found peace in Atlanta while praying is the Madina Institute. The Madina Institute is in a league of its own when it comes to Islamic education. The institute is blessed to have two resident scholars who hold classes, workshops, and programs that are relevant to women, youth, converts and Muslims of all backgrounds. There is also a feeling of community, peace, mercy, empathy and warmth in the community that I rarely find in some Atlanta masjids. I personally know the Madina Institute USA leadership and feel confident in their vision and the work they are doing.
