Nigeria's End SARS Movement

In recent news, you may have heard of what has been happening in Nigeria with SARS and the protests that have erupted as result. SARS, Special Anti-Robbery Squad, is a Nigerian Police Force unit that is dedicated to dealing and solving issues related to robbery, motor vehicle theft, kidnapping, cattle rustling, and firearms. However, SARS has been shown to harass, kidnap, arrest, and even kill the citizens of Nigeria and Nigerians who only appear to be wealthy are targeted and harassed.

Due to this unjust treatment from SARS, Nigerians have begun to protest and raise awareness on the internet and, unfortunately, on October 20, 2020, a group of peaceful protesters was shot in Lagos, Nigeria. The citizens of Nigeria continue to protest and speak out against the harsh treatment of SARS and also protest the failure of their government to provide for their citizens. The citizens have been protesting and demanding the government to provide adequate healthcare and education systems. With an unemployment rate of 27%, Nigeria’s youth demand the government put more effort into creating jobs for them. Nigeria’s End SARS movement is more than just protesting police brutality. It is also calling to attention the government’s lack of effort for providing for its citizens as a democratic country should
